On October 17, re-elect Janice Morrison for Mayor City of Nelson
I am a passionate community advocate for this incredible place we all call home. As a councillor, City Director to the RDCK, and as Mayor, I have worked hard to keep Nelson moving forward. Grounded by family roots in the community spanning over a century, I commit to bringing stable, collaborative leadership to City Hall.
From planning into building
“As a council and a community, we also did the hard unglamorous work of deciding where we’re heading.”
The last four years
- We sat down together and built the Official Community Plan, alongside our NelsonNext climate action plan, both roadmaps grounded in the priorities Nelson residents actually named as important.
- We secured $82K from the FCM to continue our work on the Urban Tree Canopy project, $400K from the Community Resilience Investment (CRI) program for fuel management, and $7M from the Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) for our forced main replacement project.
- Fairview Gardens opened its doors in 2024, allowing seniors to stay local.
- We opened the new transit hub that services the city and our neighbours.
The work ahead
- October 2026This October, new supportive housing units will add to what is already in place in Nelson, outpacing other small Canadian communities in our commitment to affordable housing.
- Next yearThe pipeline that brings water down from the Five-mile creek watershed above town is aging, and next year we begin the design phase to replace it.
- 2027Work to replace the force main that runs to the sewage treatment plant begins in 2027.
- Late 2027Railtown Flats, workforce housing, is scheduled to open in late 2027.
- To followExpansion of our sewage treatment plant will follow, and a new fire hall is on the list, with recreation/social infrastructure also part of the conversation.
